How an Outstation Round Trip Works, Day by Day

Knowing the flow of a round trip helps you plan better and avoid surprises on the bill.

Before the trip

  • Share your pickup address, destinations, dates and the number of people and bags.
  • Ask for the driver’s name, phone number and car number before the day of travel, so you know who to expect.
  • Note the meter or odometer reading at pickup — distance is counted from your pickup point back to your drop point.

On the road

  • Each calendar day has a minimum km charge, whether you drive that much or not. Long days above the minimum are charged for the actual distance.
  • Tolls, parking and interstate permits are usually paid along the way or added at the end — confirm the method when booking.
  • The driver allowance (₹400 per day for cars, ₹500 for the Winger, Tempo Traveller and Toofan) covers his food and stay for each day of the trip.

Back home

  • The final reading is noted at drop-off, and the total is worked out from the km driven, the daily minimum, the driver allowance and any tolls or permits.
  • Late-night returns can count as an extra day — check the cut-off time when booking.

Route Clusters From Ahmedabad

Saurashtra coast and temples

Dwarka, Somnath, Porbandar, Junagadh, Sasan Gir and Diu form one big loop. Plan at least 4 days; our 5 days / 4 nights Dwarka–Somnath–Diu package follows this loop.

North Gujarat temples and heritage

Ambaji, Taranga, Modhera, Patan and Shankheshwar are close enough for one- or two-day trips. Ideal for families who want a short break without a long drive.

Rajasthan

Mount Abu, Udaipur and Nathdwara are the most common round trips across the state border, each about 4–6 hours from Ahmedabad. Interstate permit charges apply. Plan 2–3 days for a relaxed visit.

Maharashtra

Nashik, Shirdi and Trimbakeshwar, or a long drive to Mumbai and Pune, take a full day each way. Break the journey on the way if you are travelling with elders, and plan 4–5 days in total.

Central and south Gujarat

The Statue of Unity, Champaner–Pavagadh and Saputara are popular for nature and short holidays.

Seasonal Planning

Time of yearGood round tripsTips
October–FebruaryKutch, Saurashtra loop, Udaipur, GirPeak season — book car and hotels early around Diwali and year-end.
March–MayMount Abu, Saputara, short temple tripsLeave early; avoid driving in the afternoon heat.
June–SeptemberSaputara, Pavagadh, Polo ForestAllow extra time in heavy rain; avoid tight schedules on ghat roads.
FestivalsAmbaji (Bhadarvi Poonam), Dwarka (Janmashtami)Expect very heavy crowds and slow roads; leave early.

Weekend Getaways From Ahmedabad

A Friday-evening or Saturday-morning start and a Sunday-night return is enough for these short escapes:

  • Mount Abu: Rajasthan’s only hill station, with Nakki Lake, Dilwara temples and cooler weather. About 4–5 hours each way.
  • Udaipur: lakes, palaces and old-city walks; add Nathdwara on the return.
  • Statue of Unity, Kevadia: about 3.5–4 hours away, with the viewing gallery, valley of flowers and evening light show.
  • Polo Forest and Vijaynagar: old temples in the forest, at their best after the monsoon.
  • Diu: a long weekend works best, given the distance — beaches, fort and seafood.
  • Ambaji and Gabbar: a quick spiritual weekend, easily combined with Mount Abu.

Crossing State Borders

Round trips to Rajasthan, Maharashtra or Madhya Pradesh involve an interstate permit for the commercial vehicle, paid at or before the border. This is usually charged extra, along with tolls, so ask for it to be included in your estimate. Carry photo ID for every adult in the car, as checks at border posts are not unusual. Diu, being a union territory, has its own checkpoint as well. None of this needs any effort from you on the day — the driver handles the vehicle paperwork — but knowing about it avoids surprises on the final bill.

Same-Day Round Trip or Overnight?

Not every outstation trip needs a hotel. Some places are close enough to see and return the same day, while others are only enjoyable with a night in between.

Works as a same-day round tripBetter with at least one night
Dakor, Mahudi, ShankheshwarMount Abu, Udaipur, Nathdwara
Modhera and PatanDwarka, Somnath, Sasan Gir
Ambaji (with an early start)Bhuj and the Rann
Champaner–PavagadhDiu, Saputara
Statue of Unity (a long day)Nashik, Shirdi, Mumbai

A useful test: if the one-way drive is more than about 4 hours, add a night. Two 5-hour drives with sightseeing in between makes for a 14-hour day, which is tiring for passengers and the driver alike.

Using the Car at Your Destination

One advantage of a round trip is that the car is with you at the destination too. Plan to use it:

  • In Udaipur, for the lakes, City Palace area and a drive up to the sunset points around the city.
  • In Mount Abu, for Guru Shikhar, Dilwara and the viewpoints, which are spread out.
  • Around Dwarka, for Bet Dwarka, Nageshwar and Shivrajpur beach.
  • In Kutch, for the craft villages and the Rann, which are far from Bhuj town.

Local running at the destination adds to the day’s kilometres, so mention these plans when booking for a realistic estimate.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Underestimating distance: Dwarka and Somnath are full-day drives, not half-day ones. Look at total hours, not just kilometres.
  • Not mentioning all stops: a side trip to Bet Dwarka or Gir adds distance — tell us when booking so the estimate is realistic.
  • Overpacking: a Dzire holds about 3 bags; if your group has more, choose an Ertiga or Innova Crysta.
  • Forgetting the daily minimum: a two-day trip where you drive very little on the second day is still charged the minimum for that day. See the taxi tariff for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the number of days counted on a round trip?

Usually by calendar day from departure to return. A trip leaving Saturday morning and returning Sunday night counts as two days. Confirm the exact rule when booking, especially for late-night returns.

Can I book a round trip that starts outside Ahmedabad?

Our round trips are planned from Ahmedabad. If you need the trip to begin somewhere else, such as Gandhinagar or another city, ask us when booking and we will confirm what is possible.

Can the driver drive the full day on a weekend getaway?

Yes, within reason. Drivers need proper rest at night, so plan to finish late evenings early enough for a safe start the next morning.
