Ahmedabad to Taranga Hills Taxi Service

Taranga Hills, in Mehsana district, is a Jain tirth on a hill at the southern edge of the Aravallis. Its main shrine is the large temple of Bhagwan Ajitnath. Pilgrims come for darshan, and some climb to the smaller shrines on the surrounding rocks. Others come for the quiet hilltop setting, which is quite different from the plains around Ahmedabad.

The trip is about 130 km and takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours each way. Happy Car Rental drives you there in a Dzire, Ertiga or Innova Crysta, or in a Winger, Tempo Traveller or Toofan for groups. To book, call or WhatsApp +91 76000 09227.

The drive north to Taranga

The route heads north out of Ahmedabad towards Mehsana, then continues through Visnagar into the Kheralu side of the district, where the land starts to rise. The highway as far as Mehsana is busy but fast. Beyond Visnagar the roads are smaller and pass through towns and villages. The final climb to the temple area is a winding hill road. Our drivers take it slowly, and passengers who get car-sick should sit in front.

Mehsana and Visnagar are convenient places for tea, breakfast or a washroom break. If you want a proper meal before darshan, eat there, because options near the temple are limited to what the pilgrim facilities offer.

What you will find at Taranga

  • Ajitnath temple: the large main temple, dedicated to the second Tirthankara and dating from the Solanki period. It is the main reason for the trip, and its scale is striking even from a distance.
  • Hilltop shrines: smaller shrines sit on the rocky hills around the main temple complex. Reaching them means climbing steps and rough paths. Wear proper footwear for the walk and carry water.
  • Digambar and Shwetambar temples: both traditions have temples at Taranga, so there is more to see than the main shrine.
  • Dharamshala and bhojanshala: there are pilgrim facilities if you plan to stay or eat on site. Check timings locally.

The hill climbs are not suitable for everyone. Elderly visitors can still have darshan at the main temple and rest while younger family members do the walk.

Best time to visit

October to February is the most comfortable season. The air is cooler and the hill walks are easier. During the monsoon the hills turn green and the drive is scenic, but the paths can be slippery. In summer, finish any climbing early in the morning, because the rocks heat up quickly.

Weekends and holidays bring more visitors. For a quieter darshan, a weekday works better.

Combining Taranga with Vadnagar and Modhera

A return trip from Ahmedabad to Taranga is roughly 260–270 km. Outstation round trips are billed on a 300 km minimum per day, counted from our garage and back, so a straight Taranga-and-back trip will usually be billed at the minimum. With only a small gap left, it makes sense to add one nearby place:

  • Vadnagar: an old town on the route, known for its carved toran gateway, its lake and its historic temples. It is easy to fit in on the way back.
  • Modhera Sun Temple: the well-known Solanki-era sun temple, a little away from the direct route. With an early start, Taranga, Vadnagar and Modhera can be done in one long day. Two days is more relaxed. Our Patan and Modhera heritage tour guide has ideas for a longer route.
  • Mahudi: for a Jain tirth day, you can visit Mahudi on the way up or back, if you start early. See the Ahmedabad to Mahudi taxi page.
  • If you have work or family in Visnagar or Mehsana, a stop there fits naturally. If you only need a drop in Visnagar, there is an Ahmedabad to Visnagar one-way taxi.

Kilometres above 300 in a day are charged per km. Rates are on the taxi tariff page, and toll and parking are extra. We don’t list a one-way fare to Taranga itself, so if you only need a drop, ask when booking.

Pickup and drop

We pick up from anywhere in Ahmedabad. Pickups from the northern areas such as Chandkheda, Motera and Sabarmati, or from Gandhinagar, cut some time off the trip. At Taranga, the driver takes you up to the temple’s parking area and waits. If you are staying at the dharamshala, we can collect you the next day as a separate booking, or stay with you for both days.

Choosing the right vehicle

The hill road favours a vehicle with good ground clearance and a steady ride. An Ertiga or Innova Crysta is a comfortable choice for families, and a Dzire handles the trip well for up to four people. Pilgrim groups, school trips and trekking groups usually book a 9 seater Winger, an 11 seater Tempo Traveller or a Toofan. Tell us if you are carrying anything bulky, such as a folding wheelchair, so we can make sure it fits.
