Mount Abu is the hill station Ahmedabad heads to when the plains get hot, and during Diwali and summer vacations it fills up with Gujarati families. Others go for the Dilwara Jain temples, the Brahma Kumaris centre, or a quiet couple of days by Nakki Lake. The last stretch is a winding ghat road, which is one reason many people prefer not to drive themselves.

The road to Mount Abu

The trip from Ahmedabad follows the highway north through Mehsana and Palanpur, crosses into Rajasthan a little after Palanpur, and reaches Abu Road town at the base of the hills. From Abu Road, a ghat road of roughly 25–30 km climbs to Mount Abu with a series of hairpin bends. That last climb takes longer than the distance suggests, so the full drive is usually four to five hours.

Breakfast and tea stops are easy to find on the highway around Mehsana and Palanpur. Leaving Ahmedabad early in the morning means you climb the ghat in daylight and reach in time for lunch and a lake walk. In the monsoon, fog can settle on the ghat road and the driver will slow right down; in December and January, mornings on the hill are cold, so keep a jacket in the car rather than in the boot.

Rajasthan border tax and the hill entry fee

Because Mount Abu is in Rajasthan, a Gujarat taxi pays a state entry tax at the border checkpost. The amount depends on the type of vehicle and how many days it will be in Rajasthan. It is not part of the per-km fare and is charged extra, along with tolls and parking, as listed on our taxi tariff; please confirm the current amount when booking.

Separately, a small local entry fee is usually collected on the way up the hill, and popular points such as Sunset Point have paid parking. Keep some change handy so the car is not held up at the barrier.

What to see in Mount Abu

• Dilwara Temples – the Jain temples known for very fine marble carving. Visiting hours for tourists are limited and photography is not allowed inside, so check timings on arrival.
• Nakki Lake – the centre of town, with boating, a walking path and the market lanes around it.
• Sunset Point and Honeymoon Point – evening viewpoints; expect crowds during holidays.
• Guru Shikhar – the highest peak of the Aravalli range, reached by road and then a short flight of steps.
• Achalgarh – an old fort and the Achaleshwar Mahadev temple on the way to Guru Shikhar.
• Brahma Kumaris centre – many visitors stop at the organisation’s campuses on the hill.

The points are spread out, so having your own car on the hill saves a lot of waiting for local taxis. Local running on the hill is counted in your trip kilometres.

When to go

April to June is the main season for Gujarat visitors, when Mount Abu is noticeably cooler than Ahmedabad. Diwali holidays are the busiest of all: hotels sell out and traffic around Nakki Lake can crawl in the evenings. The monsoon turns the hills green but brings fog and occasional road repairs. Winter is quiet and pleasant by day, with very cold nights. Weekends are always busier than weekdays.

Day trip or overnight stay

A day trip is possible but tiring, with nine to ten hours of driving and little time on the hill. One or two nights works much better. Remember that the 300 km per-day minimum applies to each day of a round trip, even a day when the car mostly stays parked at your hotel.

Pickup and drop points

We pick up anywhere in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, including the airport and Ahmedabad Junction. On the hill, we drop at your hotel; a few properties sit up steep lanes where larger vehicles cannot go, so the driver will stop at the nearest point. Some travellers only need a ride to Abu Road railway station or a drop on the hill. For that, an Ahmedabad to Mount Abu one-way taxi means you pay for one direction only.

Choosing a vehicle for the ghat road

All our vehicles handle the climb, but comfort differs. An Innova Crysta rides the bends more smoothly and has space for winter jackets and extra bags.
