The route: NE1, then NH48

The drive comes in two parts. The first part is the expressway (NE1) to Vadodara, which is quick and steady. After that comes NH48 via Karjan, Bharuch, Ankleshwar, Kosamba and Kamrej before you enter Surat. The NH48 half is slower, with heavy truck traffic, the Narmada crossing and the busy entry into the city.

Most drivers take a tea or breakfast break around Vadodara or Bharuch, roughly halfway. If you want to reach the markets by late morning, leave Ahmedabad between 5:30 and 6 am. Surat’s city roads get congested in the evening, so time your arrival or departure to avoid the rush where you can. Trading days and market timings vary, so check them with your contacts before you fix the date.

Business in Surat: where cars usually go

AreaWhat happens there
Varachha and MahidharpuraDiamond cutting and polishing units, diamond trading offices
Surat Diamond Bourse, KhajodDiamond trading complex in the south of the city
Ring Road textile marketsWholesale sarees, dress material and fabric
Sachin and Pandesara GIDCTextile processing, dyeing and engineering units
HaziraPort, steel, energy and heavy industry on the coast

Buyers often visit several units or market buildings in one day. Parking around the textile markets and diamond lanes is tight, so the driver can drop you at each building, move off and come back when you call. Send the list of addresses in advance; Surat’s areas are spread out, and Hazira in particular is a separate run of its own.

Family time and food

  • Dumas beach: a black-sand beach south-west of the city, popular in the evening for snacks and the sea breeze. The sea here is not suitable for swimming.
  • Surat Castle: an old fort near the Tapi river in the old city, worth a short visit.
  • Food: locho for breakfast, ghari sweets, and Surati undhiyu in winter. Ask the driver to stop at a farsan shop before you head back.
  • Further south: Navsari and Valsad are a short drive beyond Surat. For a drop there, see the Ahmedabad to Navsari one-way taxi.

Same day, overnight or one-way?

A Surat return is roughly 540–550 km, which means ten or more hours of driving in one day. It is possible for a single meeting, but most business travellers stay one night and drive back the next day. Round trips over the daily minimum are billed on actual kilometres, with driver allowance for each day and tolls and parking extra.

Many travellers go one way by car and come back by train. In that case the Ahmedabad to Surat one-way taxi means you only pay for one direction. Families heading for the hills can carry on from Surat to Saputara; see the Ahmedabad to Saputara taxi page.

Weddings and family functions in Surat

Many Ahmedabad families have relatives in Surat, and the wedding season, roughly October to February, brings a lot of group travel on this route. If several cars are needed, book them together and share one list of pickup addresses, so they can leave at about the same time and meet at a common tea stop on the way.

Pack the wedding clothes and gifts in bags that are easy to unload, and tell us about any large items such as trunks or sweet boxes in advance so we send a vehicle with enough boot space. Fares can rise in festival and wedding peaks, so confirm the rate when you book.

Pickup and drop

In Ahmedabad, traders are often picked up from Naroda, Odhav and the old city markets, and professionals from SG Highway, Prahlad Nagar and Satellite. Visitors flying in can be met at SVPI airport. In Surat, common drops are Surat railway station, Surat airport on Dumas Road, hotels around Athwa and Ghod Dod Road, the textile markets and residential areas such as Adajan and Vesu.

Choosing a vehicle

  • Dzire: one or two traders with light luggage on a market visit.
  • Ertiga: families of up to six, or buyers carrying sample bags and parcels back.
  • Innova Crysta: a long day on the road with a lot of in-city running. The extra comfort shows over 500 km.
  • Winger, Tempo Traveller or Toofan: wedding parties, group visits to relatives, or trade delegations.

Per-km rates for each vehicle are on the Taxi Tariff page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Ahmedabad to Surat take by taxi?

Roughly 4.5–5.5 hours for about 265–275 km. The expressway part is quick; most of the variation comes from NH48 traffic and the Surat city entry.

Should I book one-way or a round trip to Surat?

One-way suits you if you are staying on or returning by train. A round trip makes sense when you need the car in Surat for meetings or want to come back the next day with the same driver.

What time should I leave Ahmedabad?

Leaving by about 6 am gets you into Surat by late morning, before the markets are at their busiest. For the return, an early afternoon start avoids the worst of the evening traffic.

Can I stop in Vadodara or Bharuch for a meeting on the way?

Yes, on a round trip you can add stops along the route. Mention them when booking so we can plan the timing and include the extra kilometres.
