Gujarat Region by Region
Gujarat is large and varied. Knowing what each region offers makes it easier to decide where to spend your days, or how to extend one of our fixed tour packages.
Saurashtra
The Saurashtra peninsula holds most of Gujarat’s famous pilgrim and coastal stops: Dwarka, Somnath, Porbandar (Gandhiji’s birthplace), Junagadh with Girnar hill, and the Gir forest. Diu, a separate union territory, sits on its southern tip with beaches and a Portuguese-era fort. Distances are long, so Saurashtra trips are usually four days or more.
Kutch
Kutch is Gujarat’s far west — the white salt desert of the Rann, craft villages, the old town of Bhuj, the beach and palace at Mandvi, and the Dholavira archaeological site. It feels quite different from the rest of the state and needs at least three days.
Central Gujarat
Vadodara’s palaces and museums, the UNESCO-listed Champaner–Pavagadh site, and the Statue of Unity at Kevadia are all within a few hours of Ahmedabad. This region suits short two- or three-day trips.
North Gujarat
North Gujarat is ideal for heritage and temple lovers: the Rani ki Vav stepwell at Patan, the Sun Temple at Modhera, Ambaji, and the Jain temples of Taranga. Most of it can be covered from Ahmedabad as day trips.
South Gujarat
South Gujarat is greener, with Surat, the coast near Valsad, and the Saputara hill station in the Dang forests. It pairs well with a drive onward to Nashik or Shirdi.
When to Go Where
| Season | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (roughly Nov–Feb) | Kutch and the Rann Utsav, Saurashtra circuits, Gir, heritage towns | Peak season — book hotels early, especially around Diwali, Christmas and New Year. |
| Summer (roughly Mar–May) | Short trips, Saputara, Mount Abu | Hot afternoons; start early and rest midday. |
| Monsoon (roughly Jun–Sep) | Saputara, Pavagadh, Polo Forest, waterfalls in the Dangs | Gir’s lion safaris usually pause during the monsoon; Kutch’s Rann is wet and not white. |
| Oct (post-monsoon) | Navratri in Gujarat, green landscapes | Festival crowds in cities; plan temple visits around them. |

Food, Crafts and Shopping by Region
Part of the joy of touring Gujarat by car is stopping where you like — for a meal, a market or a craft village. Some things to look out for:
- Kutch: embroidery, block printing, bandhani, leather work and pottery from villages around Bhuj. Kutchi dabeli is a popular snack.
- Patan: the famous Patola silk weaving; you can see the craft in the town.
- Jamnagar and Saurashtra: bandhani tie-dye fabrics, and Kathiyawadi meals with bajra rotla, spicy curries and buttermilk.
- Junagadh and the Gir area: Kesar mangoes in early summer.
- Surat: street food such as locho and Surati undhiyu in winter, plus textile markets.
- Diu: seafood, and quiet beach cafes.
With a private car, you can carry shopping home without worrying about luggage limits — within the boot space of your car, of course.
Pacing a Tour for Families and Groups
A tour that looks good on paper can feel rushed with children or elderly parents. A few simple choices make a big difference:
- Stay two nights in at least one place, so you unpack only once in the middle of the trip.
- Do temple visits and forts in the morning, and keep afternoons for rest or short drives.
- For groups of six, two Dzires can be more flexible than one large car if people want to split up for a day; for togetherness, an Innova Crysta keeps everyone in one vehicle.
- Keep the last evening free — an unhurried dinner beats a late-night sightseeing rush.
Hotels, Permits and Bookings
- Hotels: we arrange the car and driver; hotels are booked separately unless agreed. Choose hotels with parking where possible.
- Kutch permits: some areas close to the international border, including parts of the Rann, may need a permit for visitors. Rules can change, so check current requirements before you travel and carry ID for every adult.
- Diu: Diu is a union territory, so entry formalities and local rules may differ from Gujarat — the driver will be familiar with the checkpoint.
- Rajasthan add-ons: interstate permit charges apply when the car crosses into Rajasthan; confirm when booking.
Wildlife at Sasan Gir
Sasan Gir is the home of the Asiatic lion and one of the highlights of a Saurashtra tour. Safari permits are booked separately through the official forest department system, not through us, and they sell out early in winter and on holidays. Book your safari slot first, then plan the car around it.
- Safaris use forest-approved vehicles; your taxi takes you to the reporting point and waits.
- Morning slots start early, so stay in or near Sasan the night before.
- The park usually closes for the monsoon months — check the dates before planning.
- Devalia, the interpretation zone nearby, is an alternative if you cannot get a jungle safari slot.
For trip costs, see the taxi tariff. Travelling with children? Our family road trip ideas may help you pace the trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to tour Gujarat?
October to March is the most comfortable; the Rann Utsav in Kutch runs in winter.
Can you customise a package?
Yes. Share your dates, places and group size, and we will suggest a route and car.
Can you extend one of the fixed packages?
Yes. You can add a night at Sasan Gir, Diu or Junagadh, or change the order of stops. The car is charged per km with a daily minimum, so extra days and distance are added accordingly.
Do you book the Gir safari or hotels?
We arrange the car and driver. Gir safari permits are booked through the official forest department system, and hotels are booked separately unless agreed with us in advance.
Can we see the white Rann outside the Rann Utsav?
The Rann is usually at its whitest in the dry winter months. You can visit outside the festival period too, but avoid the monsoon, when the area is wet. Check current permit rules before you go.
