Popular Pilgrimage Destinations

Planning Your Yatra

  • Check darshan timings and plan your departure so you arrive before the temple’s busy hours.
  • Combine nearby temples — for example Dwarka, Bet Dwarka and Somnath in one trip; see our Dwarka–Somnath tour.
  • Festivals are busy — book early around Navratri, Janmashtami and Bhadarvi Poonam.
  • For elderly travellers, an Innova Crysta is the most comfortable on long drives.

One Way or Round Trip

Most pilgrimages are booked as round trips so the car waits for you. If you plan to stay longer, a one-way taxi may suit you better.

Temple-by-Temple Practical Notes

Every pilgrimage place has its own rhythm. These general notes help you plan the road part of the journey; please check darshan timings and temple rules locally, as they change on festival days.

Ambaji

Ambaji lies in the Aravalli hills near the Rajasthan border, roughly 3.5–4 hours from Ahmedabad. Many families combine the main temple with Gabbar hill, which is close by. It works well as a long day trip, or as a first stop on the way to Mount Abu.

Dwarka and Bet Dwarka

Dwarka is a long drive — plan a full day on the road from Ahmedabad and arrive by evening. Bet Dwarka is reached from Okha, a short drive away, and Nageshwar is also nearby, so keep a separate half-day for these. Walking around the main temple area involves narrow lanes, so the car usually parks a little away.

Somnath

Somnath sits on the coast in southern Saurashtra. The temple is easy to walk around, and Bhalka Tirth and the Triveni Sangam are a short drive away. Somnath combines naturally with Dwarka, Sasan Gir or Diu.

Palitana (Shatrunjaya)

The Jain temples of Palitana are on top of Shatrunjaya hill, reached by a long climb of several thousand stone steps. Most pilgrims start very early in the morning to avoid the heat. Doli (palanquin) services are commonly available at the foothill for those who cannot climb — ask about them on arrival. Plan a night halt in Palitana so you can begin the climb fresh.

Nathdwara (Shrinathji)

Nathdwara is in Rajasthan, about 45 minutes beyond Udaipur. Darshan happens in short windows through the day, and the crowd moves quickly, so it helps to stay overnight and attend more than one. Interstate permit charges apply when the car enters Rajasthan.

Closer to Ahmedabad

Dakor, Mahudi, Shankheshwar and Taranga are all easy day trips. They suit elderly parents who prefer to sleep at home, or families who want a short Sunday darshan with lunch on the way back.

Travelling With Elderly Parents

Many pilgrimages are planned for parents or grandparents, so comfort matters more than speed.

  • Shorter driving days: break a long route like Dwarka into two days if needed, with a halt at Rajkot or Jamnagar.
  • Frequent stops: tell the driver at the start that you would like a break every two hours or so.
  • Seat choice: the middle row of an Ertiga or Innova Crysta is easier to get in and out of than the back row. A Dzire is fine for two or three people.
  • Medicines and documents: keep regular medicines, prescriptions and ID cards in a handbag, not in the boot.
  • Wheelchairs and queues: some temples have arrangements for elderly or differently-abled visitors. Ask at the temple office on arrival.
  • Drop-off close to the gate: the driver will try to drop you as near the entrance as traffic rules allow, then park and wait.

Festival Crowds: What to Expect

Bhadarvi Poonam at Ambaji

Around Bhadarvi Poonam (usually in September), very large numbers of devotees walk to Ambaji from across Gujarat. The highways towards Ambaji are lined with walking pilgrims for days, so vehicles move slowly and traffic diversions are common. Leave much earlier than usual, expect parking far from the temple, and consider visiting a few days before or after the peak.

Janmashtami at Dwarka

Janmashtami brings huge crowds to Dwarka, and hotels fill up well in advance. Book your rooms first, then the car. Expect long queues and plan to walk from wherever the police allow vehicles to stop.

Navratri, Diwali and long weekends

Ambaji, Pavagadh and other Mata temples are busy during Navratri, and every major temple sees crowds around Diwali and public holidays. Booking a few days ahead is sensible at these times.

Overnight Drives for Early Darshan

Many families like to leave Ahmedabad at night and reach the temple town by morning. This can work well, but a few things are worth knowing:

  • Rest before darshan: arriving at 5 a.m. after a night in the car is tiring, especially for elders. A few hours at a hotel or dharamshala to freshen up makes the day far more pleasant.
  • Driver rest: if the driver has driven through the night, plan a lighter schedule for the rest of the day so he can sleep before the return.
  • Daytime is easier for long routes: for Dwarka, Somnath or Nashik, a daytime drive with a night halt is often more comfortable than an all-night journey.
  • Short routes suit night starts best: an early-morning start to Ambaji, Dakor or Shankheshwar gets you there before the crowds and back home the same day.

Food and Stays on a Yatra

Most pilgrimage towns in Gujarat have plenty of pure vegetarian food, and many have bhojanalayas run by temple trusts or community groups. Jain food without onion and garlic is easy to find in Palitana and Shankheshwar, and on request at most highway restaurants.

  • Dharamshalas and trust-run guest houses are common in Dwarka, Somnath, Ambaji and Palitana. Some need advance booking, especially on festival days.
  • Carry dry snacks and water for long highway stretches where stops are far apart.
  • If anyone in the group has dietary restrictions for a fast or vrat, tell the driver — he will know which highway stops serve suitable food.

Dress and Etiquette Tips

  • Wear modest, comfortable clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Carry a stole or dupatta.
  • Footwear is removed before entering; wear slip-on shoes and keep a pair of socks for hot or cold floors.
  • Many temples do not allow mobile phones, cameras, bags or leather items inside. Cloakrooms are usually available, but leaving such items in the car with the driver is often simpler.
  • At Jain temples such as Palitana, follow the local rules on food and items carried up the hill.
  • Carry small change for offerings, prasad and shoe stands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the driver wait during darshan?

Yes, on a round trip the car and driver stay with you.

Can we leave at night to reach by morning?

Yes. We operate 24/7 — tell us your preferred departure time.

Can we cover Ambaji and return to Ahmedabad on the same day?

Yes, many families do it as a day trip with an early start. On festival days such as Bhadarvi Poonam, the roads are much slower, so a same-day return can become very long.

Is Palitana suitable for elderly pilgrims?

The climb up Shatrunjaya hill is long and steep. Elderly pilgrims often use the doli service at the foothill. Stay the night in Palitana and start early so the climb is done before the heat.

Can the driver keep our bags and phones while we take darshan?

On a round trip, the car stays with you, so many families leave bags and phones locked in the car. Keep cash, jewellery and important documents with you.
