Udaipur is a short holiday for many Ahmedabad families: lakes, palaces and old-city lanes within a comfortable half-day’s drive. It is also a busy wedding destination, so we often move guests and family members between Ahmedabad and Udaipur venues, as well as business travellers heading to meetings in the city.

The drive on NH48

The road to Udaipur leaves Ahmedabad towards Himmatnagar and stays on NH48 all the way. After Himmatnagar, the highway passes Shamlaji, where many travellers stop briefly at the Shamlaji temple, and crosses into Rajasthan at the Ratanpur border just beyond. From there it climbs through the Aravalli hills past Kherwara and Rishabhdev before dropping into Udaipur.

This is a main freight corridor, so expect steady truck traffic at any hour. The hill section has divided carriageways but some long climbs and curves where heavy vehicles slow down. Most trips take four to five and a half hours. Leaving Ahmedabad by 7 am usually gets you to Udaipur for a late lunch, with the afternoon free for a lake.

There are highway restaurants and dhabas around Himmatnagar and on the Rajasthan side after the border. Most families stop once for breakfast and once for tea. If you are leaving Udaipur in the evening, tell the driver early so he can rest during the afternoon before the night drive.

Crossing the Gujarat–Rajasthan border

At the Ratanpur checkpost the driver pays Rajasthan’s entry tax for the vehicle. It is charged in addition to the kilometre fare and depends on the vehicle and the length of your stay, so ask us to confirm it when booking. Tolls on NH48 are also extra on round trips, as shown on the taxi tariff.

What visitors usually see in Udaipur

• City Palace and Lake Pichola – the palace complex and a boat ride on the lake usually fill a morning.
• Jagdish Temple and the old city – a short walk from the palace through busy lanes and shops.
• Fateh Sagar Lake – a popular evening spot with a long lakeside road.
• Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) – a hilltop palace above the city, visited mainly for the sunset view.
• Saheliyon ki Bari – a garden with fountains, an easy stop for families with children.
• Bagore ki Haveli – a museum on the lakefront known for its evening cultural show.

Getting around the old city

Many lakeside hotels near Gangaur Ghat and Lal Ghat are in lanes too narrow for cars, and larger vehicles such as Tempo Travellers face more restrictions. The driver will drop you at the nearest point the vehicle can reach; from there it is a short walk or auto ride. If your hotel is in the old city, tell us when booking so we can plan drop timings and luggage.

Planning a two- or three-day trip

A typical plan is: drive and an evening at Fateh Sagar on day one, City Palace and the lake on day two, and the return drive on day three. With an extra day you can add:

Keep in mind that each day of a round trip is billed for at least 300 km, including days you spend only in the city, and the driver allowance applies per day.

Weddings and group travel to Udaipur

For destination weddings, families often need several cars and a couple of Tempo Travellers moving on fixed timings between Ahmedabad, the hotel and the venue. Seasons and timing

October to March is pleasant and the busiest period, with Diwali, Christmas and New Year week in high demand. The monsoon (roughly July to September) fills the lakes and turns the hills green, and many people consider it a lovely time to go. April to June is hot, so plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings. In peak holiday weeks, fares may increase, so book early.
