How the drive goes

From Ahmedabad, the usual way to Mahudi is north through Gandhinagar, then onwards towards Vijapur. Most of the route is a good, fairly straight road with light traffic once you are past Gandhinagar. The slowest part is often the start, crossing Ahmedabad or getting onto the Gandhinagar road during office hours. The last stretch passes through farmland and small villages, so drivers slow down for cattle and tractors.

If you start in the eastern or northern parts of the city, such as Chandkheda, Motera or Naroda, you will reach Mahudi noticeably sooner than from Satellite or Bopal. Tell us your exact pickup point and we will estimate the time.

A typical plan is to leave Ahmedabad around 7 am, reach Mahudi for a calm morning darshan, have the sukhadi prasad and a meal there, and be home by early afternoon. If you are going for a havan or a specific ritual, allow a few more hours and let the driver know the expected finish time.

At the temple: a few things to know

• Ghantakarna Mahavir: the main shrine. Many devotees offer sukhadi (a jaggery and wheat sweet) here.
• Prasad stays on the premises: by long-standing custom, the sukhadi prasad offered at Mahudi is eaten within the temple premises and is not taken home. Plan to share it with your group there. Don’t pack it in the car.
• Other shrines: the complex also has other Jain shrines, which most visitors include in their darshan.
• Bhojanshala and rest: there are facilities for pilgrims on site. Ask locally about meal timings on the day.

Temple timings and rules can change. Check before you go if you are aiming for a specific aarti or havan.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the calmest. Weekends and holidays bring more families, and Mahudi is especially crowded around Kali Chaudas (the day before Diwali), when large numbers of devotees come for the havan. On those days, leave very early and expect a walk from wherever vehicles are allowed to stop. Fares may also be higher during the Diwali period, so confirm when booking.

In summer, a morning visit is far more comfortable than walking the temple premises in the afternoon heat. In the monsoon, the drive is pleasant but village roads can be wet, so allow a little extra time.

The 300 km minimum and how to use it

A return trip from Ahmedabad to Mahudi is only about 130–140 km. Outstation round trips are billed on a 300 km per day minimum, counted from garage to garage, so a straight there-and-back trip will usually be charged as 300 km. Since you are paying for those kilometres anyway, many families plan a fuller day in the same direction:

• Vijapur area: there are other Jain shrines around Vijapur, such as Aglod, which devotees often combine with Mahudi.
• Koba: the Jain aradhana kendra at Koba, on the Gandhinagar side, is an easy stop on the way back.

Extra kilometres above 300 are billed per km, and all rates are on the taxi tariff page. There is no listed one-way fare for Mahudi. If you only need a drop, ask us whether a one-way arrangement is possible for your date.

Pickup and drop

We pick up from homes, societies and upashrayas anywhere in Ahmedabad, as well as from Ahmedabad Junction, Sabarmati station and the airport for visitors arriving from other cities. At Mahudi, the driver drops you at the temple’s vehicle area and waits there until you are done. If you are staying overnight at the dharamshala, we can drop you and collect you on another day. Which vehicle suits a Mahudi trip

A Dzire is enough for up to four people. An Ertiga or Innova Crysta works well for a family of five or six, especially with elderly parents who prefer a higher seat. Mahila mandals, sanghs and extended families often travel in a 9 seater Winger, an 11 seater Tempo Traveller or a Toofan.
