Ahmedabad to Somnath Taxi Service

Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas, stands on the shore of the Arabian Sea beside the fishing town of Veraval. Families, senior citizens and Shiv bhakts make this trip all year round, and many time it for Shravan month or Mahashivratri.

Happy Car Rental provides chauffeur-driven cars and group vehicles from Ahmedabad to Somnath — one-way drops for those returning by train, and round trips where the car stays for Bhalka Tirth, Triveni Sangam and onward legs to Gir, Diu or Dwarka. Call or WhatsApp +91 76000 09227.

The drive to Somnath

The 407–410 km route follows the Rajkot highway, bypasses Rajkot, and continues south through Gondal, Jetpur and Junagadh before reaching the coast at Veraval. The temple is a few kilometres beyond Veraval town. Plan for 6.5 to 8 hours of driving.

South of Rajkot the highway passes through busier towns, and traffic can slow around Jetpur. A 5:30–6 am departure gets you to Somnath by afternoon, with time for the evening aarti and the light-and-sound show held at the temple after dark. Show timings change with the season and it is not held every day, so check locally.

Halts worth making on the way

  • Gondal — the Bhuvaneshwari temple and old palaces, a short detour off the highway.
  • Virpur — the Jalaram Bapa temple between Gondal and Jetpur, where many families stop for darshan.
  • Junagadh — the city at the foot of Girnar; too large for a quick visit, but a convenient place for lunch.

Around Somnath: what pilgrims usually visit

  • Somnath temple — mobile phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside. There are cloakroom counters near the entrance, but leaving them in the car is often quicker.
  • Triveni Sangam — the confluence of three rivers near the temple, where many families perform rituals.
  • Gita Mandir and Dehotsarg — close to Triveni Sangam, linked with the last days of Lord Krishna.
  • Bhalka Tirth — on the Veraval side, about 5 km from the temple, the place associated with Lord Krishna being struck by the hunter’s arrow.
  • Veraval — one of Gujarat’s large fishing harbours. Its railway station, along with the smaller Somnath station, is the usual rail link for pilgrims.

Planning your days

Somnath on its own needs one night. Arrive in the afternoon, attend the evening darshan, do the morning aarti and local sites the next day, and start back by noon to reach Ahmedabad at night. With elderly passengers, two nights is far more comfortable. A same-day return is over 800 km of driving and is not something we recommend.

Somnath combines naturally with other Saurashtra destinations:

A sample one-night plan

WhenWhat
Day 1, early morningLeave Ahmedabad; breakfast on the Limbdi stretch
Day 1, middayOptional darshan at Virpur; lunch near Junagadh
Day 1, afternoon and eveningCheck in, evening aarti, light-and-sound show if it is on
Day 2, morningMorning aarti, Triveni Sangam, Gita Mandir, Bhalka Tirth
Day 2, afternoonStart back after lunch; reach Ahmedabad late at night

If the second day feels rushed, simply add a night — on a round trip the extra day mainly adds a driver allowance, and the slower pace is easier on elders.

Shravan, Mahashivratri and Kartik Purnima

Shravan month (around July–August) and Mahashivratri (February or March) bring large crowds and long queues, and Kartik Purnima draws a fair near the temple. Book the car early, expect festival-season fares, and allow extra time for parking. Shravan falls in the monsoon, so the highway can be slower after heavy rain.

Pickup and drop

We collect you from home, a hotel, or Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) if you are arriving by train. In Somnath, most hotels and trust guest houses are a short drive from the temple. One-way passengers are often dropped at Veraval or Somnath station for an onward train.

On the morning of darshan, keep the car parked near your hotel rather than at the temple gate — the temple area has limited parking at peak hours, and the walk is short. The driver can meet you afterwards for Bhalka Tirth and Triveni Sangam.

If you don’t need the car in Somnath, a one-way Somnath taxi lets you pay for one direction only.

Choosing a vehicle

For a couple or small family, a Dzire handles the highway comfortably. Elderly parents on an eight-hour drive appreciate the Innova Crysta’s higher seats, which are easier to get in and out of at every halt. Senior-citizen groups and bhajan mandals of 8–11 usually book a Tempo Traveller or Winger, which also has room for the prasad and shopping bags on the way home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Somnath from Ahmedabad, and how long does it take?

About 407–410 km, usually 6.5 to 8 hours of driving via Rajkot, Gondal and Junagadh. Add time for meal stops and any darshan halts on the way.

Can we do Ahmedabad to Somnath and back in one day?

It is over 800 km of driving, which is too long for one day, especially with elders. Plan at least one night in Somnath so you can attend the evening and morning aarti.

How far is Bhalka Tirth from the Somnath temple?

About 5 km, on the Veraval side. On a round trip the car takes you there along with Triveni Sangam and Gita Mandir, usually in a couple of hours.

Can we add Sasan Gir or Diu to a Somnath trip?

Yes. Sasan Gir is roughly 45 km away and Diu roughly 90 km. Add a day for each. For Gir, book safari permits separately before fixing the car dates.
