Getting to Mandvi by road
Mandvi is roughly 380–400 km from Ahmedabad, and the drive takes about 7 hours with breaks. The first part follows the Kutch highway via Viramgam and Malia into Kutch. From there the driver will either go through Bhuj and then south to the coast, or take the coastal route past Gandhidham and Mundra. Which one is quicker depends on traffic and road work at the time, and your driver will choose on the day.
Because this is a long day, plan to leave Ahmedabad by 6 am. That gives you a lunch stop on the highway and an arrival in Mandvi in the afternoon, in time for a walk on the beach at sunset. If you would rather break the journey, an overnight halt in Bhuj works well.
What to see in Mandvi
- Mandvi beach – a wide, clean beach with wind turbines on the horizon, camel and horse rides, and snack stalls in the evening.
- Vijay Vilas Palace – the former summer palace of the Kutch royal family, set in gardens near the sea, with views from the upper floors.
- The shipbuilding yard – on the banks of the Rukmavati river, where large wooden vessels are still built by hand.
- 72 Jinalaya – a large white marble Jain temple complex near Mandvi, visited by pilgrims from across Gujarat and Mumbai.
- The old town – narrow lanes and markets, and the place to try Kutchi dabeli, which has strong roots in Mandvi.
How long to stay
Mandvi itself can be covered in a relaxed day, but the drive is long enough that a round trip should be at least two or three days. A popular plan is three nights: drive to Mandvi on day one, spend day two at the beach, palace and shipyard, visit Bhuj on day three, and return to Ahmedabad on day four. In winter, add a night so you can see the White Rann as well.
If you only need to reach Mandvi, for example to visit family or to start a stay at a beach resort, the Ahmedabad to Mandvi one way taxi is the simpler option. For the Bhuj and White Rann leg, see our Bhuj car rental page, which covers permits and season timing.
Seasons and timing
The months from October to March are pleasant for a beach trip, with cool mornings and comfortable afternoons. The sea and the beach get busy on weekends, during Diwali holidays and around Christmas and New Year, so book rooms and the car in advance for those dates. Summers are hot and humid along the coast. During the monsoon the sea is rough and swimming is not advised, though the countryside turns green.
Many visitors combine the trip with Rann Utsav, which usually runs from roughly November to February. Remember that the White Rann and some other border areas need a permit, so check the current rules before you go.
Pickup and drop
We pick up from any Ahmedabad address, the airport and the main railway stations. In Mandvi, common drop points are the beach-side resorts and hotels, the old town, the Vijay Vilas Palace area and the 72 Jinalaya temple. Send the exact hotel name or a map pin on WhatsApp so the driver can head straight there.
Choosing the right car
For couples and small families, a Swift Dzire handles the highway well. Families with children, elders or extra luggage for a longer beach stay usually prefer an Ertiga or Innova Crysta, which give more legroom for the seven-hour drive. For larger groups, such as extended families or Jain pilgrimage groups visiting the temples, a 9 seater Winger, an 11 seater Tempo Traveller or a Toofan keeps everyone together.
Round trips are billed per km from our garage, with a minimum of 300 km per day and a daily driver allowance; tolls and parking are extra. The taxi tariff page has the current rates for each vehicle.
Practical tips for a coastal stay
- Pack sunscreen, hats and light cotton clothes even in winter; the sun on the beach is strong by late morning.
- Palace and temple timings vary, so check them locally and plan the palace for the morning and the beach for the evening.
- Photography rules differ at religious places and inside the palace; follow the signs or ask the staff.
- If you are coming from a business visit in eastern Kutch, our Gandhidham taxi page explains that leg, and Mandvi is a relaxed weekend add-on.
