The drive from Ahmedabad to Rajkot
Almost the whole trip is on the wide divided highway (NH47) that leaves Ahmedabad past Sarkhej and runs through Bagodara, Limbdi and Chotila before reaching Rajkot. It is one of the easier long drives in Gujarat: mostly straight, multi-lane, with fuel stations and highway hotels at regular intervals. There are toll plazas on the way; on round trips tolls are charged extra.
The slow parts are usually at the two ends — getting out of Ahmedabad through Sarkhej during office hours, and entering Rajkot through the ring road traffic. Leaving Ahmedabad at about 6 or 7 am gets you into Rajkot before the mid-morning rush, which suits a first meeting at 11.
Common stops
- Bagodara–Limbdi stretch — highway hotels for tea and breakfast roughly an hour or so out of Ahmedabad.
- Chotila — the Chamunda Mata temple stands on the hill beside the highway. The climb up the steps takes time, so add an hour or more if you want darshan.
- Kathiyawadi dhabas between Chotila and Rajkot — a common lunch halt on the way back.
Why people travel to Rajkot
Rajkot is a working city first, with a few places worth an hour if you are there anyway:
- Business and industry — engineering units, auto parts, castings and machine tools in the industrial areas around the city, and the imitation jewellery trade in the older parts of town.
- Kaba Gandhi no Delo — the house where Mahatma Gandhi spent part of his childhood, now a small museum in the old city.
- Watson Museum in Jubilee Garden, with collections from the princely-state era.
- Family visits, weddings and education — relatives, functions and students moving to colleges in the city.
- Rajkot airport at Hirasar — the newer airport is on the Ahmedabad side of the city, close to the highway, so an airport drop does not need to enter Rajkot at all.
One local habit to plan around: many shops and some offices in Rajkot take a long afternoon break. If your day mixes factory visits with market calls, keep the market visits for the morning or late afternoon.
Same day or overnight?
At about 215–220 km each way, Rajkot is one of the few Saurashtra cities you can comfortably do as a same-day round trip. A typical day: leave Ahmedabad at 6:30 am, reach Rajkot by about 10:30, spend five or six hours on work, start back around 5 pm and be home by 9 or 10 pm. With some running around inside Rajkot, the garage-to-garage total is usually in the 450–500 km range, charged at the per-km rate for one day plus one driver allowance.
If you only need to get there, a one-way taxi from Ahmedabad to Rajkot means you pay for one direction only. For a multi-day business trip, keeping the car makes sense when you have to move between several units or towns — Gondal, Jetpur, Morbi — in the same visit.
Rajkot as a base for Saurashtra
Rajkot sits at the hub of the region’s road network, so longer trips usually pass through or around it:
- West to Jamnagar (roughly 90 km) and on to Dwarka — see the Ahmedabad to Jamnagar taxi page.
- South through Gondal and Junagadh towards the coast — see Ahmedabad to Somnath taxi.
- For a planned temple circuit by road, look at the 4 days / 3 nights Dwarka–Somnath package.
Pickup in Ahmedabad and drop in Rajkot
We pick up from homes, offices and hotels anywhere in Ahmedabad. Areas on the west side — Satellite, Prahlad Nagar, Bopal, SG Highway — are closest to the Sarkhej exit, so those pickups save a little time. Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) and the airport are fine too; share your train or flight number.
In Rajkot, typical drops are Rajkot Junction railway station, hotels along the 150 Feet Ring Road and Kalavad Road, industrial areas such as Aji, Metoda and Shapar-Veraval, and the airport at Hirasar. Send the driver a location pin on WhatsApp — newer societies in Rajkot can be hard to find by name alone.
Which vehicle suits a Rajkot trip
| Who is travelling | Suggested vehicle |
|---|---|
| One or two business travellers with light bags | Swift Dzire |
| A family of five or six, or a wedding visit with gifts and luggage | Ertiga |
| Senior management, or a same-day return where comfort matters | Innova Crysta |
| A company team, delegation or wedding party of 8–11 | Winger, Tempo Traveller or Toofan |
Because the highway is smooth, a Dzire is perfectly comfortable for this distance. The Innova Crysta earns its extra cost when you do the round trip in a single day — after eight hours in the car, the legroom matters. Per-km rates for every vehicle are on the taxi tariff page.
